WHO CAN BE TESTED?
You can be tested for COVID-19 antibodies unless you have symptoms of a possible active infection such as shortness of breath, dry cough, and elevated temperature in the last 10 days.
WHAT KIND OF TEST IS THIS COVID-19 ANTIBODY TEST?
This test is for people who have either been diagnosed in the past with a COVID-19 infection by testing, or have been suspected of having COVID-19 and not been tested. There are up to 25% of people who had COVID-19 and not known it and maybe more. If you’ve had COVID-19, you will develop antibodies to the virus 2 to 3 weeks after infection. A simple blood draw from the arm will determine who has antibodies.
WHAT ARE ANTIBODIES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
Antibodies fight infections. If you have antibodies, it means you may have had or been exposed to the COVID-19 virus in the past and now may have immunity to another COVID-19 infection. The duration and level of any immunity, remains unclear as we all learn more about this infection.
WHY SHOULD I DO THE TEST?
If you test positive and presumably have protective antibodies as the country starts to “open up” you may be considered to be in the earliest group to be able to move about more safely and return to work. If you test negative or positive you should continue with all of the recommendations for mitigation of the coronavirus by your local, state and public health authorities.
IS THIS TEST ACCURATE IN DETECTING COVID-19 ANTIBODIES?
Your testing will be conducted by Quest Diagnostics with over 2,200 testing centers across the country. The test was recently authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug (FDA) for Abbott Laboratories. Abbott is making the test available as part of the FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) outlined in the Policy for Diagnostic Tests for Corona virus Disease-2019 during Public Health Emergency.
WILL THIS TEST TELL ME IF I HAVE A COVID-19 INFECTION?
No! This COVID-19 test is only for antibodies and will not tell if you are currently infected. This test is not used to diagnose COVID-19 infection.
